How Veterinary Physiotherapy Can Help
Veterinary physiotherapy can support dogs and horses of all ages, breeds and activity levels. Whether your animal is recovering from injury or surgery, returning to exercise, experiencing stiffness or simply needs ongoing support to maintain comfort and mobility, physiotherapy can form an important part of their care.
Treatment is tailored to the individual animal and may help to:
- Improve mobility, flexibility and joint range of motion
- Reduce muscular tension, stiffness and discomfort
- Support recovery following injury, surgery or periods of rest
- Improve muscle strength, balance and coordination
- Address compensatory movement patterns
- Support rehabilitation and a safe return to normal activity
- Maintain comfort and mobility in older animals
- Support working, sporting and competition animals
- Identify areas of weakness, asymmetry or reduced movement
- Promote long-term musculoskeletal health
Veterinary physiotherapy may be beneficial if you have noticed changes in your animal’s movement, posture, behaviour or performance. These changes may include stiffness, reluctance to exercise, reduced stride length, difficulty getting up, changes in gait, uneven muscle development, sensitivity to touch or a general reduction in willingness to move.

For horses, signs may also include difficulty with transitions, stiffness on one rein, changes in ridden performance or sensitivity when grooming or tacking up.
For dogs, signs may include difficulty climbing stairs, jumping into the car, sitting or standing comfortably, limping, slowing down on walks or reluctance to play.
Following a full assessment, a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan can be created for your animal. This may include hands-on therapy, stretching, range of motion exercises, targeted strengthening work and practical exercises for you to continue between appointments.
Your animal’s comfort and wellbeing will remain the priority throughout every session. Treatment will always be adapted to suit their age, condition, confidence, activity level and individual needs.
